River Stour, Canoe and Camping trip.

(open to other crafts). Need to be 1 star or higher.

We will be going downriver from the historic market town of Sudbury, through the Dedham Vale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty to the edge of the tidal estuary at Cattawade, near Manningtree.

This 25 mile stretch of river passes through some of the most idyllic Suffolk scenery and links together the homes of two of the most famous painters of the British landscape. We start at Sudbury, home to Thomas Gainsborough and pass through Bures, Nayland, Stratford St Mary, Dedham and the iconic Flatford Mill, made famous by John Constable.

The Plan

Friday

Travel down afternoon or evening and set camp, we are staying at the same campsite on both nights.

Rushbanks Farm, Wissington, Colchester CO6 4NA.

There is a pub 1.7 miles, or can rent a camp fire pit.

Saturday

Drive to Sudbury (get in), paddle to Bures for lunch, and then continue on to Wissington (campsite)

In the evening we plan to cook food over the campfire (bring your own food)

Sunday

Pack away tents in the morning & sort car shuttle

Paddle downstream to Stratford for Lunch and then continue on to Cattawade

Each session is approximately 5-7 miles long and takes around 3-4 hours. The total paddling time for each day is therefore 6-8 hours.

Costs

  • £22 – 2 people in tent/caravan/camper per night (maximum of 2 adults)
  • Additional children (above 2 people) are free of charge in the same tent
  • £5 – per additional adult in tent/caravan/camper per night (above 2 adults)
  • £5 – additional separate children only tent per night

It is a fairly basic campsite, although there are warm showers. They do allow campfires but only ones they provide.

  • £4 – Fire Pit (per stay)
  • £12 – Per large bag of wood
  • Wood includes fire-starters & kindling

We would get a few of these for cooking the dinner on the Saturday night and would split the cost between us.

Usual campsite rules apply, with the addition of no dogs.

We can do kit list if people require nearer the time

Due to booking requirements we would need to know who is coming, with campsite fees paid by start of July.
