weekday daytime club night
The outing is part of a wider, national aim to encourage more women to take up paddling. And even though it’s badged as a #ShePaddles event, female-friendly chaps are very welcome too!
We’ll meet at the clubhouse at 10am on Friday February 16, ready to be briefed and on the water for 10.30am for a gentle flat water bimble for those members who have completed the Discover course or equivalent and ideally attended the VKC Winter Paddling course.
We’ll be back at the clubhouse late morning-ish, in time for coffee at the bar (which is open from 9 – 2pm on Fridays).
It’ll be aimed at kayaks, sit-on-tops, SUPs and Canadians.
To get us started @Andrew Bennett will be the leader, ably assisted by new member Sacha Fisher.
Parking could be tricky as the Star peeps will be out too – so leave time to find an alternative space elsewhere just in case.
Bring a hot drink, food and snacks and dress appropriately for the conditions on the day.
Youth paddlers must have a responsible adult with them at all times (although as it’s a school day they should all be hard at work so this will not be relevant!!)
Paddler numbers are limited to suit the leader to paddler ratio, so please post here or contact @Andrew Bennett if you’d like to attend.
Please feel free to ask questions.
Come and join the #ShePaddles fun!

The annual river blessing is an ancient ritual which involves highlighting the need to care for and treasure our local waterways, and to bless those who use them! This is a short event open to all on the river bank but to paddle you need to be a Viking Kayak Club member.
Part of the ritual involves the priest throwing a wooden cross (which I made from a local fallen tree) into the river, and it’s considered good luck to be the one to retrieve it (often in a competitive fashion).
Be ready to set out from the clubhouse at 11 am, the ceremony is at 11.15 am, Then those who want to will carry on down to Cardington for a picnic.
Bring a change of clothes, just in case….along with your food and drink for the picnic.
Courses are situated on the River Great Ouse in Bedford on a 4.3 km circuit. Races to suit Elite, Intermediate, Novice and Lightning divisions.
