Wednesday ‘Club’ Night
Wednesday night is our members club night. We paddle all year round. This is a social paddle and open to all members.
We are a mixed discipline, mixed ability club. There is a range of kayaks, Canadian canoes and SUPs available to borrow as well as all the safety equipment you’ll need, including female friendly BAs. Everyone is very welcoming and will help you choose the right kit for you if you are not sure.
All club paddles are led by qualified instructors and they carry safety and first aid equipment on paddles in case there are any problems.
There is often different paddling options, depending on the time of the year and the size of the group. We always have a flat paddle which is suitable for families and beginners.
We are also lucky to have the Etienne Stott White Water Arena a short paddle from the club, so if you are an experienced white water paddler there may be an option to paddle on the course, this depends on the river levels and instrustor availability.
What to expect
- 6 pm – Arrive at the club. If you are borrowing club equipment and are not sure what to select, there will be people around to help you.
- 6.30 pm – Safety briefing from the paddle leader and introductions on the bank before getting on the water.
- 7.30 pm – 8 pm (dependent on weather and conditions) Return to club house, put away kit and head for the showers.
- 7.30 pm – approx 10.30 pm – The clubhouse (with a licensed bar) is open, which also stocks a range of non-alcoholic and hot drink options. There is no food available but some people get pizza from a takeaway close by. If you are not paddling, you are still welcome to join everyone in the bar for a drink after.
Who can join a Club Night?
Club nights are members only. You do also need to have done a start or discovery course with the club, or have a recognised Paddle UK qualification to join a club night paddle.
If you have recently attended a course or you are an experienced paddler that is new to the club, you can join a club night as a taster session before committing to being a paid member.
However, please do not just turn up on a club night without letting us know first. Email: membership@vikingkayak.co.uk.
You can find out more about being a member of the club here. Or if you are ready to join, or need to renew your membership, click here.
Club Trips and Activities
As well as ‘club night’, we organise a range of club events, day trips, as well as weekends further afield. These tend to be more in the summer months, but there have been white water trips throughout winter as well.
Last year there were flat water weekend trips to Wye Valley and Medway Canoe Trail as well as a number of white water trips.
Closer to home, we organise day trips to/from the club to Bromham or Great Barford, or paddle a different section of the river such as St Neots, Felmersham or Sharnbrook.
Keep an eye on the VKC Members Facebook page, and the club calendar.
