VKC Himalayan Balsam Removal Day

Sun 4th August 2024

Once again the Himalayan Balsam is flowering so VKC is continuing its environmentally valuable project clearing Himalayan Balsam in the area downstream of Cardington Lock. Previous attendees will find it particularly rewarding to see the massive improvement already made.

It is most effectively cleared by a small group of tandem open canoeists, so the canoes in the boathouse have been reserved. Numbers attending will be strictly limited, competent open canoeists preferred and the ability to transport an open canoe to Cardington is an advantage. If transporting canoes proves problematic, we will paddle to and from the club, which adds 4 miles to the event.

Participants must be available for the whole time (as we will be moving away downstream from Cardington lock). We won’t go further than Castle Mills Lock, a return trip of about 3.5 miles, half of it upstream.

Meet at 9 am at the club, and finish at 2 pm. Due to the focused nature of the task, it is not suitable for younger junior members, but older teenagers are welcome.

A reasonable level of agility may be required but you do not need to be particularly strong.

If you are available and interested in attending on 4th August, please contact Anne at touring@vikingkayak.co.uk ASAP letting me know whether you have your own open canoe which you intend to use or if would you need to use a club canoe.
